ADM Aéroports de Montréal and SOFIAC are taking action: the decarbonization of the terminals at YUL Montréal-Trudeau International Airport and YMX Mirabel International Aerocity is officially underway. Funded with a $14 million investment from SOFIAC, this ambitious project aims to reduce GHG emissions from airport infrastructure by over 50%, while significantly enhancing energy performance.
By integrating advanced energy efficiency solutions, ADM will achieve an 11% reduction in energy consumption and a 3.6 MW reduction in winter peak demand—contributing to Hydro-Québec’s peak demand management efforts and reducing the airports’ overall carbon footprint.
Committed to a sustainable development strategy, ADM was seeking a partner to help implement tangible decarbonization measures—without compromising its investment capacity. Thanks to SOFIAC’s innovative model, ADM is able to launch this initiative without deploying any of its own capital, preserving its financial flexibility for other strategic projects.
The project is built on a suite of complementary technical measures, designed to deliver both immediate and long-term benefits. This ensures a deep decarbonization process tailored to the operational demands of a major international airport hub.
Beyond environmental benefits, reduced energy consumption will also translate into concrete improvements for the millions of passengers who pass through YUL each year. Enhancements to lighting and environmental controls in the terminal and boarding bridges will create a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for travelers.
The energy efficiency measures will be implemented in collaboration with Johnson Controls, SOFIAC’s technical partner on this project. This initiative highlights SOFIAC’s national expertise and ambition: removing financial and operational barriers to accelerate the decarbonization of large-scale infrastructure.
The project was made possible thanks to the synergy between ADM and SOFIAC’s teams. By combining their expertise, they’ve shown that energy transition can be a powerful strategic lever for airport infrastructure development.
This partnership demonstrates SOFIAC’s ability to support organizations in achieving ambitious decarbonization goals—without compromising growth or financial stability.
